Island defense has two layers: intercept Crown threats with a suitable ship when possible, and maintain supplied fortifications at the attack points that reach the haven. Gun towers are not passive scenery. They need correct facing, a continuous connection, an assigned Greenhand, and ammunition production that remains active while the fleet is away.
Read the attack point before building
The official Buildings reference states that a Small Gun Tower must face an Attack Point. Medium and Large upgrades inherit that defensive purpose. Select the available shoreline position and verify the facing indicator before committing materials. A tower with a clear view in the landscape can still be invalid when it is not aligned to the designated point.
Preserve a connection route and delivery space behind the tower. A defensive footprint that blocks its own road or isolates a nearby pier can create two failures at once. Use the Vertical Layout guide to reserve waterfront approaches before the district becomes crowded.
Understand the tower chain
Small Gun Tower
Requires one Greenhand and consumes Black Powder. It establishes basic coverage at an Attack Point.
Medium Gun Tower
Upgrades from the small tower and adds Cannonball demand alongside Black Powder. Its stronger capability creates a longer supply obligation.
Large Gun Tower
Upgrades from the medium stage. Confirm the live tooltip for its current ammunition behavior and cost before committing late-game materials.
The official wiki’s Large Gun Tower row is less complete than the earlier stages, so do not infer undocumented rate or range values. The reliable rule is that higher defense still depends on workforce, connection, and supply.
Build ammunition before the warning
Black Powder is a multi-step intermediate resource, not a last-minute purchase. The official Resources page describes a chain using Guano and Charcoal, with Charcoal itself consuming Hardwood and Stone. Cannonballs belong to a later metal chain. If those inputs also serve construction, a ship, or another industry, the tower can be starved at the exact moment it is needed.
Reserve a defensive stock and inspect net production. A full tower input store is useful, but the upstream chain must be able to refill it after an attack. Place a Warehouse buffer only when it shortens or clarifies the route; every Fetcher connection costs labor.
Protect staffing during expansion
Each tower uses a Greenhand. A building wave can consume available Drifters and leave the defense unstaffed. Before an expected threat, pause low-priority construction or production and confirm the tower’s worker slot is filled. Buildings do not operate partially staffed, so “almost enough” workers does not keep a tower ready.
All Hands on Deck can increase worker demand elsewhere. Disable it on nonessential sites if the defense chain or tower itself is waiting for Hands. The Jobs guide covers worker recovery without demolition.
Intercept with the right ship
The Steam description explicitly presents ships and island fortifications as complementary defenses. If a Crown event can be intercepted in the Seven Seas, compare its recommended class, tier, and stats with available ships. Destroyer-class vessels specialize in gun damage and armour, but use the event’s displayed requirements rather than assuming one class answers every threat.
Interception has risk. Losing Health or Crew destroys the ship, and sending the only suitable vessel away can expose another task. Keep the land defense supplied even when a fleet response looks favorable. See Naval Combat for countering opponent actions and managing Supplies.
Defense readiness checklist
- Every relevant tower faces a valid Attack Point and remains connected.
- Its Greenhand job is filled after construction and production assignments settle.
- Black Powder reaches all towers; Cannonballs reach stages that require them.
- Upstream Guano, Charcoal, Hardwood, Stone, and metal chains are not paused or output-blocked.
- The defending Pirate Camp has stable food, drink, housing, and Cohesion.
- At least one ship is evaluated for interception without assuming the newest hull is the correct class.
Recover after an attack
Inspect tower storage and the ammunition chain before rebuilding losses. If a source is empty, follow the chain backward; if output is full, restore its destination. Repair or replace the ship only after confirming the pier can support the new crew. Replenish the defensive reserve before resuming optional construction.
The Epic achievement listing includes “You Shall Not Pass!” for intercepting 25 Crown attacks, but that title and condition are Epic achievement metadata. It shows that repeated interception is a tracked objective on Epic; it should not be presented as an official Steam unlock condition without platform-specific confirmation.
