The Compass is Corsair Cove’s main unlock map. Principle Path Points open more than a hundred buildings, boosters, ships, and upgrades across four quadrants. Spend with a short-term constraint and a medium-term ship role in mind; an unlock has value only when the haven can build, staff, and supply it.
Orient the four quadrants
From the top and moving clockwise, the Compass places Notoriety north, Empire east, Seafaring south, and Wealth west. Their fleets align with Prowler, Destroyer, Hunter, and Reaver classes respectively.
The first three options in each quadrant are available when the Compass opens. These early choices show the path’s practical identity through a mix of boosters, buildings, transport, economy, or other tools.
Understand tier gates
The official reference organizes upgrades into five rings. It lists access thresholds at:
- Tier 1: 0 invested points
- Tier 2: 3 invested points
- Tier 3: 7 invested points
- Tier 4: 12 invested points
- Tier 5: 20 invested points
After enough points are invested in a ring, the next ship unlocks and opens the following ring. The ship unlock is automatic at the threshold; it does not require another point beyond the listed investment.
Account for the economic unlock bundle
A ship threshold can simultaneously open buildings needed for that tier. The official example says the seventh Seafaring point unlocks the tier-3 Tempest and six buildings: Weaver, Wood Workshop, Sailmaker, Lime Kiln, Shell Fisher, and Tabby Cradle.
Read that bundle before spending. The ship represents new capability, while the buildings represent new land, labor, inputs, Fetcher routes, and crew support. Build the chains in an order the existing economy can sustain.
Decide between depth and adjacency
Deep investment reaches later specialist ships and path monuments sooner. Adjacent investment can unlock stronger hybrid plus ships between two quadrants. The Compass example uses the Empire Iron Fist and Seafaring Tide Runner to open the Steel Edge Destroyer+.
Choose depth when one path’s ships and settlement tools directly serve the current campaign. Choose adjacency when both neighboring paths provide useful early unlocks and the hybrid has a defined event role. A split without an operational reason simply delays the next ring.
Evaluate an unlock before buying it
For a building, identify placement, construction goods, dedicated workers, inputs, output or effect, and camp ownership. For a booster, identify the exact producer or system it modifies. For a ship, identify pier level, hull materials, allowed crew, upkeep, and the Seven Seas task it should handle.
Several official wiki table cells are still marked unknown. Do not calculate a “best rank” from incomplete data. Use the displayed 1.0 interface for the current effect, and prefer a confirmed first rank that solves an immediate limit over an undocumented maximum.
A point-spending worksheet
Before the next point, write four lines:
- Constraint: the current failure, such as transport, food, defense, Coin, Cohesion, or ship fit.
- Unlock: the nearest Compass option that directly changes that failure.
- Support: buildings, workers, resources, or pier capacity needed to use it.
- Follow-up: the ship threshold or adjacent hybrid this point advances.
If the support line is larger than the current economy can handle, defer the unlock and strengthen the relevant chain.
Reassess at every ship threshold
When a new tier opens, stop allocating points briefly. Build or inspect the newly available ship and support buildings, then review the next quests. The experience gained from that tier is better evidence for the next path choice than an endgame diagram viewed at the start.
Does the Compass contain only technology?
No. It contains ships, buildings, boosters, and other upgrades tied to the four Principle Paths.
Is a BuildID a Compass version?
No. Steam BuildIDs identify depot builds, not the public semantic label or an in-game technology revision. The content here is scoped to the public 1.0 release.
Can I unlock ships between paths?
Yes. Adjacent-path progress can open hybrid plus ships at defined borders.
Which path is universally best?
None is established as universal. The right path depends on the haven’s economy, desired ship specialization, quest demands, and adjacent unlock plan.
