Corsair Cove Captains Guide

Choose Corsair Cove captains by event objective, traits, abilities, cards, ship stats, recovery risk, and pre-departure assignment.

Every ship needs a captain, and captains are chosen for the event rather than permanently bound to one hull. The Hooded Horse beginner resource states that each captain has unique traits and event abilities and can be switched freely before departure. Compare those benefits with the event’s recommended class, tier, stats, and objectives instead of leaving the last assignment in place.

Read the event before the captain card

Select the Seven Seas event and note its type, potential loot, recommended ship, and emphasized stats. Crown-port attacks, chases, investigations, and negotiation-style encounters do not test the same strengths. The event’s objectives become fully visible on arrival, but its recommendation gives you a preparation signal.

Choose the ship first when class and tier are the main constraint. Then open the captain reference and look for traits, cards, or abilities that reinforce the likely objectives or protect the ship’s weak area.

Compare four kinds of value

Passive trait

A standing benefit can improve the ship or a recurring event action. Prefer one that applies to the current mission rather than an impressive but irrelevant bonus.

Event ability

An ability may open or strengthen a decision during particular objectives. Match it to the event family when that information is visible.

Captain cards

Captains contribute choices to the turn-based encounter. Consider their supply cost, linked stat, and whether they counter or advance the objective.

Recovery value

A rare or currently important captain may be worth protecting when a ship is lost, even if that means sacrificing another recovery option.

Exact captain values and a complete ranking are not reproduced because the official living reference does not yet provide a stable full table. Use the current captain panel for numeric comparisons.

Switch captains at the pier

Assign the captain before the ship embarks. Confirm the portrait or name on the pier and ship panel, then reopen the event to make sure the planned hull is still selected. A captain change cannot compensate for an under-tier hull or a camp that cannot support its Crew.

Captains can be switched without rebuilding the ship, which makes specialization practical. Maintain a few mission roles—combat pressure, navigation or chase support, investigation, and resource-oriented events—rather than declaring one universal best captain.

Use cards with the opponent action

At each objective turn, read the opponent’s announced action. Countering in the same area and rolling higher can negate the attack; choosing an unrelated action may allow both effects to resolve. A captain card is valuable when it answers that exact threat or advances the objective faster than a generic ship action.

Most battle choices consume Supplies. When Supplies run low, switch to support options to recover them before the useful captain card becomes unaffordable. The Naval Combat guide explains dice pools, counters, and the Health/Crew defeat states.

Captain and ship should solve one problem together

Ships establish baseline Health, Crew, Supplies, and specialized stats. Captains modify the decision set and can emphasize certain events. Pair them deliberately: a ship already strong in the recommended stats may use a captain to extend that advantage; a borderline ship may need protection or a more reliable counter.

Do not use captain strength as permission to ignore the event’s tier recommendation. Dice add variance, and an event can contain up to four objectives. The crew and hull need enough depth to survive a poor roll or an imperfect opening hand.

What happens after a ship loss

The official Events page states that reaching zero Health or Crew loses the event and destroys the ship. A current specialist database reports that post-loss recovery can force a choice among Crew, salvage, or captain, and that an unrescued captain becomes temporarily unavailable rather than permanently dying. Treat the exact recovery interface as community-reported and verify it in the current 1.0 game before relying on the outcome.

Before a dangerous event, create a manual save and decide what you would protect. Rebuilding an advanced hull, rehiring Crew, and waiting on a captain have different economic costs.

Build a useful captain roster

Additional captains can be found through Seven Seas progression and events. Keep the roster diverse. When a new captain arrives, compare their trait, temperament, cards, and event abilities with existing roles. The Epic achievement listing names recruitments for Raven, Timothy, Enrique, and Charlie among its disclosed entries, but those Epic descriptions are not a complete captain list or official Steam unlock metadata.
